Cravings and Turning Green, "oh my!"

Okay, in the blog world you never where you are going to get an idea for a post! I wasn't sure what I was going to post about until I visited Kelli this morning. She was talking about some yummy cinnamon rolls she had made and one of her commenters said how yummy they looked but that they couldn't stand the smell of cinnamon. This particular commenter said that when they were pregnant that was the smell that sent them "running to the bathroom" every time! That got me to thinking that it might be fun to write about and hear what Y"ALL sent your dear husbands out for at one in the morning because you "just had to have it" and also what made your stomach do "flip flops" when you smelled it!

When I was pregnant with my son I was teaching Kindergarten. I would get off at one in the afternoon and as I would drive home it's like my little Chevy Chevette would have a mind of it's own and automatically drive to the Hardee's drive-thru. I know, I know, it wasn't good for me, I blame it all on the Chevette!! Now, for some reason, I couldn't have just one, but two, count em two CHILI DOGS loaded with lots of onions and mustard. EVERY DAY, Y'ALL! While reading stories to the children my mouth would start to water in anticipation of the feast I was about to partake of! Chili Dogs would be dancing through my head!

With my son I could not stand the smell of Dove bar soap. Now mind you, I have always loved Dove but as soon as that line turned pink or blue or whatever the heck it was, my tummy would go into assault mode every time I smelled it. The problem? My dear Grammy was a devout Dove soap user so every time I would visit her and have to go to the bathroom (y'all know how many times that is when you are pg!) I would literally take a big gulp of air before entering the room (kinda like a swimmer!) and then hold my nose and "take care of business" as fast as I could! That got me to thinking this morning, "hey, maybe that's why he had such an aversion to bathing when he was a little boy!" But then I thought, " Nah!!"

When I was carrying Miss Bonnie I could not STAND THE SMELL OF COFFEE. Now, I've never been a big coffee drinker but I have always LOVED the smell of it brewing. Not during those nine months, though! My craving when I was carrying Miss Bonnie was something totally different than I had with my son. We had a candy store in our local Mall and they made the BEST, I mean the BEST cotton candy you could ever put your sticky hands on! My poor hubby made "hmmm, SEVERAL" trips to the Mall so I could indulge in the "cottony sweetness." As I've told y'all before, Miss Bonnie is a girly girl through and through and she just adores the color pink. She also has the sweetest heart of anyone I know. Mmm, makes you kinda think! LOL Now it's your turn to share!

With my first son (who was born way too early), I craved Mexican food.

With my daughter, I craved cheeseburgers (and still do!).

It was when I was thirty-five and pregnant for my son that I had really strange cravings...ice cream Dove bars and guacamole burgers. Sigh...

I don't remember any specific aroma that I couldn't take but I was so sick with all three kids in the beginning that I could not shop in the meat section of the grocery store until at least the second trimester!

Susan, I am the absolue worst for remembering ANYTHING connected with any of our 4 pregnancies. I can't recall any bad smells that made me gag, and the only craving I remember (and I'm not sure which baby it was) was footlong hotdogs from Pop's on Rt 17 in York County when we lived in Hampton/Newport News. I craved those but don't remember getting them. LOL!

With my first, I was hungry all the time. I love cream-filled chocolate-covered doughnuts anyway, but once during that pregnancy I just HAD to have one - at midnight! My dh worked 4 till midnight, and when he came in the door, I asked if he'd go get me a doughnut. He told me if I really wanted it, I could go get it (hang with me here!). I turned around to go get dressed, and he asked where I was going. "To get dressed," I said. He went right back out the door and came home with not one doughnut, but one dozen! LOL

My other two pregnancies, I don't remember craving anything. I wasn't very sick with any of them, but during my third one, I got sick after eating tuna salad every time I ate it - but I LOVED it. After the baby was born, it was a long time before I could take a bite of tuna again. And that baby, now almost 14, hates tuna! LOL

Love the pregnancy stories. Guess it's been too long (37 years) to remember what I did or didn't like when I was pg.

But, those rolls on Kelli's blog sound wonderful.

Oh, that is too funny about the cotton candy and Miss Bonnie loving the color pink!
I couldn't stand cooking, eating or even looking at ground beef while I was pregnant. LOL
As far as cravings go, I ate ALOT of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. :0)

P.s I'm so glad you had a wonderful rest and that you are back! I missed you!

I craved oranges and lots of them when I was pregnant with our twins (boys..10 months old-8 months adjusted). I could not stand the smell of seafood........more especially fish. Never asked dh to "go out to get me something". He did go to the kitchen a lot though......for oranges and no my blood sugar didn't go through the roof.

I was very sick after the boys were born by emergency c-section. They fed me Premium wheat saltines and grape juice. I still crave that. Is that weird or what?

What a fun topic! When I had all five of mine I craved hot peppers - the Pepperoncini type. With my first I also craved Raspberry frozen fruit bars and milk, milk, milk. My husband used to tell me to just go ahead and guzzle a couple of gallons in the grocery store, so we wouldn't have to carry so many home - lol! [Little did he know what his future held! With five kids in the house, we now consume an enormous amount of milk!]

My mom flew in (to Maine from Florida) on my due date. On my way to the airport, I swung by the grocery store to pick up -- yep -- a couple of gallons of milk. I couldn't understand why everybody was staring at me until I saw a picture of myself a few days later. At just over 5 feet and a full 9 months pg -- I was enormous, ready to pop!

Back to the hot peppers -- with baby #2 I ran out of peppers one afternoon after work. So as I slurped the juice from my last pepper I stood looking at the nice full jar of hot pepper juice. It sure looked good - lol! I know, I know, but you're talking about a pregnant woman here, a woman driven by something other than common sense! What a mistake drinking that was. About 30 minutes later I had the worst headache of my life. I drank a LOT of water trying to dilute the effects! :oD

As far as yucky stuff -- popcorn always does me in when I'm pregnant! Our Sunday School class was right behind the church kitchen, a kind of gathering place for those that do other things during S.S. hour. Some Sundays right in the middle of class that smell would waft in, and I'd think I was going to lose it right then and there! Yuck!

I don't recall ever sending my hubby out for anything - I have craved dairy products with both pregnancies. And, lots of smells have been an issue. Any meat was off limits for a while as I simply could not stand the sight or smell of it.

I can hardly believe I craved Burger King when I was pregnant...had to be a cheese whopper cut in half....
yuck...I don't even like Burger King now, but that's what I wanted...I was so sick I could hardly eat anything, but for some reason, the Whoppers did the trick.

I was so sick (24/7) with all my 6 babies...that most of the time my husband was picking up Gatorade!! I couldn't stand the taste of coffee, the smell of Old Spice, or much of anything else either. Toward the middle of my pregnancies, my husband was sent for Tums, Mylanta, or Maalox...I'm short-waisted and the heartburn was HORRENDOUS! I'm surprised they didn't all come out pink and cherry-flavored! LOL
But...for a VERY short time between the morning sickness (which lasted the whole time with the twins and at least 5 month with the others) and the heartburn...I LOVED eating Teryiaki Steak from the Japanese restaurant and pimiento cheese tasted pretty good too. I know, I know...wierd, wierd, wierd! LOL
This is a fun post!
Hugs,
Amy
