Friday Favorite:
Granny Smith Apples

I love Fall for many reasons and apples are right up there on top of the list. I particulary love Granny Smith Apples. I love their tartness, their flavor, and even their color. One way I love to use this apple is to make applesauce. My Grammy taught me how make it many years ago. I remember my son telling my Grammy that she should put a label on her applesauce and sell it at the grocery store because it was a lot better than store made:) LOL My absolute favorite way to use them are to make fried apples! I have eaten fried apples my whole life but I don't know if it is a Southern thing, a Virginia thing, a Universal thing or just a "Susan" thing!

All I do is take some butter and put it in the frying pan on med. heat. When butter is melted I add my apples slices and start stirring around so they will brown up a bit. After that I add a little water, sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes nutmeg to taste. I let cook through and then serve them warm. You won't believe how perfectly yummy your house will smell. Okay, y'all help me out. Do any of you make these?? I was just curious. I think it is interesting the way the different parts of the country have their different ways of cooking along with their "specialty" dishes. If you haven't tried these I recommend them highly, you are in for a treat!

I'd never heard of fried apples until I read "Farmer Boy" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. One of Almanzo's favourite dishes was "fried apples 'n onions". I've always wondered what it would taste like. Perhaps that's more of a savoury dish, whereas yours is more sweet?

We make baked apples....very similar - same ingredients, just baked in the oven!

Oh, this brings back memories! My mother made fried apples all the time (in Alabama!) I don't make them mainly because I didn't know how Mother made them. I'm going to try yours!

My Grandma made them all the time when I was growing up. I have followed the tradition. We eat them served over warm biscuits--YUMMY!!

P.S. My Gram was raised in PA :-)

Fried Apples! Oh my! Oh my!

Never had them. Could this be because I'm a Yankee? ,-)

But believe me, I just read this to husband and... We will have them, and soon.

Thank you!

You asked if any of us make fried apples? My answer, I do now!!

These sound heavenly and I've quite a few Granny Smith apples in the fridge right now (and plenty more still on the tree!)

i've had cooked apples like that at Cracker Barrell, but other than that, I think it might be a southern thing, lol.

Ladies, thank you so much for participating in my "unscientific" poll! LOL It seems like the apples are a mainly southern thing but could become a "country" thing if some of our blogging friends take our advice! LOL Happy eating, everyone:)
