A Southern Gal's Delight!
Yesterday was a GREAT day at our "home place." Why, you ask? Well, every true southerner knows it's not really summer until you've had your first tomato sandwich of the season! I'm not talking store bought tomato, I'm talking "fresh from your garden tomatoes." How does one make a tomato sandwich??? Easy! Take a slice of WHITE bread (Wonder bread preferably) slap on a lot of mayo (Hellmann's, I'm a mayo "snob!") and then add those juicy, delectable slices of home grown tomatoes. Sprinkle some salt and pepper and you have the best sandwich in the world! Of course, a true southerner has to have a glass of sweet iced tea to go along with it! AHH, it's the simple things in life that bring the greatest joy!

I LOVE fresh tomato sandwiches!!! We have TONS of green tomatoes hanging on the vines and I am trying to waiting patiently for them to turn that beautiful "please pick me now" red color!!! Thick chunks of tomatoes, white bread and lots of mayo-OH YES!! And definitely sweet tea to go with it all!!! THAT is a southern meal, for sure!!!

Yum, yum! My tomatoes have yet to have even a hint of red on them, but my children are asking when the tomato sandwiches will be ready!

One thing, tho'--we toast our white bread! Don't know if it's an Indiana thing, or just a family thing--both mine and dh's families did it!

Yum! One of my summer favorites! I also like tomato sandwiches with a slice of Vidalia onion on them! Yum-yum!

Mrs. U, I know what you mean about waiting for your tomatoes to ripen. I would go out and check everyday, there is NOTHING like that first vine-ripened tomato. It doesn't get much better than that!

g.l.h., We have never toasted our bread for the tomato sandwiches, as a matter of fact we try to get the freshest loaf of Wonder because the softer and "squishier" the bread, the more we like it!! LOL

Terri, we love Vidalla onions as well. Haven't tried them on tomato sandwiches!! Do you know that some people around here eat the Vidalla onion by itself, like they would an apple?? I don't think I would ever be able to do that!!YUK

Marie, you are being "bad" again!! LOL Trying to cause trouble!!! My Mama raised us on Hellmanns, "that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!" SHH, don't tell anybody around here that we don't use Dukes, I know it's a "no no!" I love it when you comment Marie, you always make me laugh!!

I just love tomatoes! I'm looking forward to some blt's. We don't even have little tomatoes on our plants yet...just blossoms.
