Family Fun
I am a BIG advocate of family game nights. There's nothing better than sitting around the table with your family playing a fun game. Every time we get together with my family in Kentucky we have Trivial Pursuit matches. Oh, what fun we have. This past month I am delighted to say that my team finally won! Yay!This is after many, many losses, we won't even go into how many:o) We always have such a great time laughing and carrying on.
I don't know if any of you have ever heard of a Mystery Party, but we had one when we were in the mountains. It's a game that actually comes in a box but it's quite different that a regular game. Everybody is given a "role" to play. You have to dress like the character, say the lines, etc. and at the end everybody has to guess "who done it?" This particular one we played took place in the Disco era and so everybody came dressed accordingly. My sweet Mama and my Dad had to dress like Sonny & Cher (only they were called Sunny & Share;o) Here's a sweet pic of them. Aren't they cute?
When Gerry & Ashley come over we love to play games, too. Last week they came over and it was "make your own pizza" night. I had all the "fixins"and everybody made their own pizzas. After our pizza we played a new game we hadn't tried before, called Apples to Apples. It was sooo much fun! You can read about it here.
I always want my home to be filled with laughter and joy and I most certainly want my children to have fond memories of home. I think that playing games together is a wonderful way to make that happen.
On a side note, Grammy was always arranging family talent shows. She would always say "everybody has a talent they can share." "You can sing a little song, do a little dance, recite a poem, tell a joke, etc.." She would then say, "if you don't participate in the talent show then you have to put a dollar in the hat and it will go to the needy" ~ to which my Grandfather would always reply, "where's the hat?"
What games does your family like to play?

Oh, we love to play games! One of our newest favorites is Ticket To Ride - they have a US version, European and Swiss I think. It is sooo fun! We also love Settlers of Catan and also all the old board games.
Thank you so much for the books! I'll be sending you a note in the mail, but wanted to let you know they arrived! :)
Apples to Apples is a favorite here, as well. We do a lot of those kinds of games, except Battle of the Sexes. W-a-a-y-y too much competition, at least with my brood!
Scrabble or Yahtzee is what we play when it is just two or three of us. Now we have grandbabies, so the Candyland and Chutes and Ladders have come out of retirement!
Your folks are so, so cute!
Hi Susan ~ our family is a real game-loving family, too! Apples to Apples is a fun favorite, and the Bible version is good, too (you don't have to worry about inappropriate cards when guests are playing with you!). Pictionary and Balderdash are two other favorites. You can learn so much about a person playing games that you wouldn't otherwise!
Pat, sadly my family has never been one for games, I love them, but no one else seems to - I love to play cards, Uno, SkipBo, Phase 10 and a game called Hand & Foot. I play Bunco once a month with friends - I love stuff like that!
that's great. in my family too we were used to play quite a lot, especialluy in the car during the neverending Sunday excursions... now we see all together soo rarely that when we meet we are able to chat, and have fun, for hours.
God bless your family

I love the idea of the mystery game!!! And we have Apples to Apples, it is still with the plastic on it, we will for sure get going with it now!!!!
Great post as always!

What a beautiful picture of home life you describe! I love family games nights. I haven't heard of some of these games - but they sound very engaging. The Mystery Game sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing!
My family is so small that we don't have any game nights, but my mother spent hours playing games with me when I was a child. I think a game night is a very valuable part of creating a memorable homelike atmosphere in which to raise children. They'll look back fondly on those times years later.
Susan - there is something for you on my blog today!!
Your parents are adorable, Susan. You are so blessed to still have them. I miss mine so much!

Skip-bo, playstation 3 baseball, and the card game PIT are some of our favorites! From time to time we will invite the couples from our church's young marrieds small group over to join in our game nights. have you ever heard of PIT? it's hilarious and very fun! Anyways, I'm thankful to have stumbled upon your blog, and just wanted to introduce myself. Lord Bless you and come visit soon! :)
